Two regions, Sesto San Giovanni, located near Milan, and Vynissieux, a short distance from Lyon, were until recently seen as communist and working class areas. This was due to the heavy industry and numerous high powered trade unions. In recent times both areas have become significantly less industrial and have met with a deep social change. It is speculated that recent strong political changes happening in both areas had a strong impact on the social and industrial climates.

Showmanship Is Alive In Italian Politics
Yesterday, an opinion poll In Italy suggested that Italy’s next election could be won by an ally of Silvio Berlusconi, the Northern League, manned by Umberto Bossi. Berlusconi made his mark, and his money, as a property speculator in Milan before rising with Bettino Craxi’s socialist party and using his new found connections to create a series of successful television stations. His business is now drowning in debt and this casts suspicions onto his reasons behind entering the political field.
