Italian politics is a democracy that consists of multiple parties elected into positions in parliament. Legislation is in the power of two houses of parliament, and council of ministers. The birth of Italian politics began when the monarchy was eliminated by a referendum in 1948. At that time the King of Italy was replaced with a President. The President is elected and serves a seven year term. He in turn appoints the council of ministers and Prime Minister.
